The Isolation and Lockout Training Course (Non-Accredited) is designed to equip workers and safety personnel with the knowledge and awareness required to safely isolate and control hazardous energy sources during maintenance, servicing, or repair activities.

Incorrect or incomplete isolation procedures can result in severe injury, fatalities, and equipment damage. This course addresses those risks by providing a clear understanding of energy sources, lockout/tagout (LOTO) systems, and compliance with Australian WHS regulations and safe work standards.


Course Content

The course covers key isolation and lockout principles, including:

1. Hazardous Energy & Isolation Awareness

  • Identification of hazardous energy sources: electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, and thermal
  • Risks associated with uncontrolled energy release
  • Planning and preparation for safe isolation procedures

2. Lockout & Tagout Systems

  • Correct application of lockout devices and tags
  • Preventing accidental start-up or energisation
  • Control of locks, key systems, and device tracking

3. Verification of Isolation

  • Testing and confirming zero-energy states
  • Use of safe verification tools (e.g. test meters, pressure gauges)
  • Importance of rechecking before maintenance work begins

4. Safety Standards & Regulations

  • Understanding duties under WHS legislation
  • Application of relevant standards including:
    - AS/NZS 4836 – Safe Working on Low Voltage Electrical Installations
  • Documentation, permits, and sign-off protocols

5. Incident Response & Risk Management

  • Response procedures following lockout failures or near misses
  • First response for electric shock or mechanical incidents
  • Reporting, incident investigation, and prevention strategies

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued a Certificate of Attendance. While this is a non-accredited course, the certificate verifies that the learner has completed training in safe isolation and lockout procedures in accordance with WHS standards.

This can assist with internal safety compliance and workforce development.
